Is a Basic Paypal Account Hurting Your Sales?

Posted: Lis on Jun 27 | Business Topics

If you don’t have a PayPal Business or Premier account, you can’t take credit card, debit card or e-check payments through your Etsy site. With a basic Paypal account, only those customers who actually have a Paypal account can pay you.

I am able to process credit card and e-check payments through my Etsy site because I have a Paypal Business Account. The vast majority (79%) of my customers pay by credit card or e-check. Very few of them actually have a Paypal account. If I didn’t have a Business Account, I would make far fewer sales.

Paypal charges a per-transaction credit card processing fee when you upgrade, but it’s worth it, because you will be making sales that, without the ability to take credit card payments, you probably would not make.

Another reason to upgrade from a basic account is you are protected against charge-backs if you have a business or premier account (as long as you ship to a verified address and use delivery confirmation).

You can upgrade your account by logging into PayPal, and clicking the “Upgrade Account” link in the “Enhance Account” box.
