Do your descriptions sell your product?

Posted: Lis on Jun 10 | Business Topics

A good listing description is key to selling your handmade product on Etsy. Here are some suggestions for improving your item descriptions.

Spell Check

Spelling mistakes look unprofessional, and looking unprofessional will make potential customers nervous. So after you write out your listing description, copy the text and paste it into your favorite word processing program for a quick spell check.

Include the Essentials

Don’t make your customers guess about any aspect of your product. Make sure you include all of the important details. Here are some examples:

Keep it Short

Don’t make your customer work to get the info they need to purchase your product. Keep your sentences short. Cut your descriptions to five or fewer sentences.

If you can’t live without a multi-paragraph listing description (e.g. if you want to put your store policies in your item descriptions), put all of the item info in the first paragraph and use a separator line and subheadings. Here’s an example:

One pound (approximately 30) delicious gourmet walnut brownies. Ships in an attractive polka dot tin by priority mail.

Using this format for longer descriptions will make it a lot easier for your customer to scan the information that you are giving them.
